Darkroom Contemporary’s The MOTION PROJECT invites the people of Cape Town to explore and rediscover the designed spaces of historical and contemporary Cape Town through the mediums of photography and dance. An official project of World Design Capital 2014, this collaboration between Darkroom Contemporary and movement photographer Oscar O’Ryan culminates in a photographic exhibition portraying some of the personalities who make up Cape Town’s dance industry.

Oscar O’Ryan is a well respected movement and theatre photographer, with clients including the Baxter Theatre, Magnet Theatre, Dance For All, Artscape Theatre, Cape Town City Ballet and New Africa Theatre, and he will be working with Scenkonst Sormland Theatre Company in Sweden later this year.Oscar’s work was selected as a top ten finalist in the media category of the Ramsay Media Picture the Change photo competition and his work has been exhibited at the Cape Town City Hall and Side Street Studios.

Historical and present-day architectural landmarks of Cape Town provide the backdrop to this photo story of dance. O’ Ryan captures the grace of dancers as they interact with these urban spaces – letting the lens reveal the surprising similarities and contrasts between the human form and the built environment. Well- known locations included in this photo series include the Castle of Good Hope, The Old Train Station Building, Artscape Theatre and the Civic Centre. dancers featured in this year’s project include Grant Van Ster and Shaun Oelf of Figure of Eight Dance Collective, Philip Boyd – founder and CEO of Dance For All, Simone Botha of Bovim Ballet and Rosana Maya of Tiera Flamenca.

This photo exhibition will be open to the public from 3 July to 2 August 2014 at the Youngblood Gallery, Beautiful Life Building, 70-72 Bree Street. The exhibition opening event on 3 July forms part of the popular gallery tour initiative First Thursdays, and starts at 6 pm. At this event Darkroom Contemporary will perform an extract of their upcoming production, BLUEPRINT. Entrance is free. After this, the exhibition can be viewed daily between 9 am and 5 pm.

Initiated in 2012 as a public awareness campaign, The MOTION Project aims to foster an appreciation of the wealth of talent within the dance industry. This project forms part of Darkroom Contemporary’s development initiatives, with the objective to act as audience development tool, to provide a platform for dancers and to showcase Cape Town’s beautiful urban spaces. Since being launched in 2012, The MOTION Project has invited 80 dancers to participate, and images from the project’s 2012 and 2013 sessions have been exhibited at Cape Town City Hall and Side Street Studios.

This project is made possible through the generous support from Sunshine Company, ORMS ProPhoto, Picturesque Framing and Youngblood Arts and Culture Development.
